Career Day

Calling all East Brook Community Members…..

Career Day is an excellent opportunity for students to explore different areas of employment through a variety of displays, demonstrations, brief presentations and hands on activities. It is also an excellent opportunity for YOU to be involved in your child’s/children’s education.

2021/2022

When:

Chair: Tara Nelsen-DeFalco

Would like to be a Career Day Presenter? Please email Tara Nelsen-DeFalco

Participating in an event like this will be a memorable experience for yourself and your child/children.  You do not need to be currently working in the career you present.  It may be a previous career, current, or one that the participant has retired from.

Participation is not only limited to parents, but extended to family and friends.  We are looking for parents to participate, as well as use connections and relationships you have with friends, family and community members to generate many presentations.  The time commitment would be minimal, and the rewards immeasurable!

Each presenter will be assigned a classroom, and classes will rotate in throughout the day. Our goal is for all grades, K-6, to be exposed to as many different careers as possible. Examples include, but are not limited to: firefighters, police officers, EMT/ambulance volunteers, librarians, teachers, doctors, dentists, mechanics, engineers, business employees, athletes, hair stylists, nail technicians, sanitation employees, scientists, pharmaceutical employees, electricians, plumbers, builders, architects, family CEO’s (stay at home parents), speech/language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, cashiers, lawyers.

Presenters must be prepared to:

  • Be available 8:30am - 11:00am on a date TBD
  • Deliver a presentation, which may include a poster, a PowerPoint slide deck, a demonstration, a hands-on experience, samples, discussion/education
  • Have an exciting day with the East Brook students!!!

TALKING ABOUT CAREER DAY WITH YOUR CHILD(REN)

In preparation for Career Day, get your child thinking about the notion of a 'career'... ask your child ‘What would you like to be when you grow up?  What is your Dream Job?’

Then, engage your child in conversation following the event. Some suggested follow-up questions include:

  • What profession did you think seemed the most fun?

  • What profession seemed the most challenging?

  • What is the most surprising thing you learned?

  • Was there any profession you definitely would NOT want to do?

  • What would you like to be when you grow up now?  Has it changed?
